Inbound to outbound, barely touching the floor — consolidate, deconsolidate and re-route freight without paying to store it.
Get a freight quoteWhat is cross-docking?
Cross-docking transfers freight directly from an inbound truck to an outbound one, with little or no time in storage. Pallets are received, sorted, and reloaded for their next leg in hours, not days — so your goods keep moving instead of sitting on a shelf accruing storage cost.
RS Group cross-docks at our 80,000 sq ft Atlanta warehouse, about 30 minutes from Hartsfield-Jackson. It is the right move for consolidating multiple inbound shipments into one outbound load, splitting a large inbound load to several destinations, or simply re-routing freight through Atlanta without warehousing it. (Note: our warehouse does not hold hazmat, perishables, bulk alcohol, scrap metal, household goods or vehicles.)
Why cross-dock with RS Group
Cross-docking trades storage for speed. We make the handoff fast and the freight visible the whole way.
- Less storage cost — freight moves through, it does not sit.
- Faster delivery — inbound and outbound connect in hours, not days.
- Consolidate several inbound shipments into one outbound load.
- Deconsolidate one large inbound load to multiple destinations.
- A central Atlanta location, 30 minutes from Hartsfield-Jackson, with regional reach.
How we use cross-docking
Cross-docking solves a few specific freight problems:
- Consolidation — combine LTL or multi-supplier inbound freight into a single outbound truckload.
- Deconsolidation — break a full inbound load into smaller outbound shipments by destination.
- Mode change — shift freight between modes (e.g. an inbound container to outbound LTL) on the way through.
- Re-routing — redirect freight through Atlanta to its next leg without a warehousing stop.
Cross-docking vs. transloading
| Cross-docking | Transloading | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Inbound to outbound, minimal storage | Move cargo between containers / modes |
| Typical trigger | Consolidate or deconsolidate freight | Container to domestic trailer |
| Storage | Little or none | Little or none |
| Re-handling | Pallets re-sorted and reloaded | Cargo re-loaded into different equipment |
| Best for | Re-routing and consolidation | Ocean container to domestic distribution |
Frequently asked questions
How is cross-docking different from warehousing?
Warehousing stores your freight until you need it; cross-docking does the opposite — it keeps freight moving by transferring it from inbound to outbound with little or no storage. If your goal is to avoid storage time and cost while consolidating or re-routing, cross-docking is the right service.
What is the difference between cross-docking and transloading?
They overlap, but cross-docking is mainly about consolidating, deconsolidating or re-routing freight from inbound to outbound, while transloading is specifically moving cargo between containers or transport modes — for example, an ocean container into domestic trailers. We offer both and will tell you which fits your move.
What can’t the warehouse handle?
Our Atlanta warehouse does not hold hazardous materials, perishables, bulk alcohol, scrap metal, household goods or vehicles. For most palletized commercial freight, cross-docking through our facility is a fast, low-cost way to keep your goods moving.
