Freight density calculator

Enter your pallet dimensions and weight to get density in pounds per cubic foot — the number that drives an LTL quote.

Get a freight quote

Density is the single most important number on an LTL shipment: it determines your freight class, and freight class drives your rate. This calculator runs entirely in your browser — nothing is sent anywhere — so you can plan a shipment in seconds, then send us the details for a real quote.

Calculate your density

How density works

Density is weight divided by volume. The formula in pounds per cubic foot (PPCF) is:

  • Volume in cubic feet = (length × width × height in inches) ÷ 1728 — there are 1728 cubic inches in a cubic foot.
  • Density (PPCF) = total weight in pounds ÷ volume in cubic feet.
  • Measure to the extreme points of the shipment, including the pallet and any overhang — carriers do.
  • Higher density usually means a lower freight class and a lower rate; light, bulky freight costs more per pound.
  • Use the total shipment weight (freight + pallet + packaging), not just the product weight.

Density is the starting point for an LTL quote, but class also depends on stowability, handling and liability. Tell us your shipment and we will confirm the class and the rate.
