What is an Indirect Air Carrier?
An Indirect Air Carrier (IAC) is a company authorized by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to accept cargo from shippers and tender it to airlines for transport. The IAC does not operate the aircraft — it is the trusted intermediary that consolidates freight, applies the required security screening and documentation, and hands the cargo to the airline under a TSA-approved Standard Security Program.
Air cargo moving in the U.S. has to meet strict chain-of-custody and screening requirements. The IAC carries that compliance responsibility, which is why shippers who fly freight work through one instead of trying to qualify with the TSA on their own.
