Freight class lookup

Estimate your NMFC freight class from density — then let our team confirm it before you book.

Get a freight quote

Every LTL commodity gets an NMFC freight class between 50 and 500. A lower class means a denser, easier-to-handle commodity and a lower rate; a higher class means light, bulky or fragile freight and a higher rate. This lookup estimates your class from density alone — it runs entirely in your browser, so nothing is sent anywhere.

Estimate your class

Estimate only. Actual NMFC class also depends on stowability, handling and liability — confirm with our team before you book.

How NMFC class and the density banding work

The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) groups commodities into 18 classes. Density is the biggest driver, and the standard density bands look like this:

  • Class is set by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) and used by every LTL carrier.
  • Density maps to class in bands: 50+ PPCF is roughly class 50, 30–35 PPCF around class 55–60, 1 PPCF around class 400, and under 1 PPCF class 500.
  • The denser the freight, the lower the class number — and the lower the rate.
  • Class also weighs stowability (does it stack?), handling (is it fragile or hazardous?) and liability (value and theft risk), so the same density can land in different classes.
  • Some commodities have a fixed NMFC class regardless of density; this lookup is the density-only starting point.

Estimate only. The actual NMFC class also depends on stowability, handling and liability, so confirm with our team before you book — a misclassed shipment triggers a re-class charge from the carrier.
