What is partial truckload shipping?
The mode that lives between LTL and full truckload — and often beats both for mid-size loads.
Get a freight quoteMost shippers know the two ends of the spectrum: less-than-truckload (LTL) for small shipments and full truckload (FTL) for loads that fill a trailer. Partial truckload (PTL) is the mode in the middle — and it is often the cheapest, gentlest option for freight that is too big for LTL but too small to justify a whole truck.
If you ship 6 to 18 pallets, or anything in the 5,000–27,000 lb range, PTL deserves a serious look.
How partial truckload works
In PTL, your freight shares a trailer with one or two other shipments rather than the dozens it would share with in LTL. The truck makes far fewer stops, and your pallets are loaded once and stay put until delivery.
Pricing usually runs on linear feet or space used rather than freight class, which means your rate is not driven by an NMFC classification that may not reflect your product fairly.
When PTL is the right choice
PTL shines in a specific window between the two truckload extremes:
- Mid-size shipments — roughly 6 to 18 pallets or 5,000–27,000 lb.
- Fragile or high-value freight that benefits from fewer handlings than LTL.
- Freight with a high freight class, where LTL classification pricing is punishing.
- Loads that do not need expedited speed but do need careful handling.
PTL vs. LTL vs. FTL
The simplest way to choose is by size and handling tolerance. LTL is most economical for one to five pallets but routes your freight through multiple terminals, with handling at each one. FTL gives you a dedicated trailer with no extra stops, ideal once you fill it. PTL keeps the low handling of FTL for a fraction of a trailer — the best of both worlds for the mid-size load.
Because PTL freight is touched far less than LTL freight, the risk of damage drops — which is why fragile and high-value shippers often prefer it even when LTL looks cheaper on paper.
Getting a PTL quote
To quote PTL accurately, have your pallet count, dimensions, total weight, pickup and delivery ZIP codes, and any special handling ready. The more precise the dimensions, the tighter the rate — PTL pricing rewards accurate space estimates.
