Get a freight quoteWhat is drayage?
Drayage is the short-distance move of an intermodal container between a port, a rail ramp and a warehouse or distribution center. It is a small piece of the journey but a critical one: a missed appointment or a late chassis turn can trigger demurrage and detention charges that dwarf the move itself.
RS Group coordinates drayage out of Atlanta and the Southeast — booking the appointment, sourcing the chassis, and getting the box to our warehouse or your facility before the free-time clock runs out. We handle roughly 1,400 containers a year.
Why broker drayage with RS Group
Container moves live or die on timing. We manage the clock so you do not pay for someone else’s delay.
- Appointment booking and chassis sourcing handled before the container lands.
- Demurrage and detention watched and minimized — we move on free time, not after it.
- A 34,000-carrier network for drayage capacity even in tight markets.
- Direct connection to our 80,000 sq ft Atlanta warehouse for transloading or storage.
- One point of contact across the port, the rail ramp and the final dock.
Drayage modes we move
We match the right drayage mode to your lane, your timeline and your container:
- Truck drayage — a dray tractor pulls your container by road from the port or ramp to the destination.
- Rail drayage — the container moves to or from an intermodal rail ramp, then drays the final miles by truck.
- Intermodal drayage — coordinated handoffs across ocean, rail and road so a single box moves end to end.
Frequently asked questions
What is demurrage, and how do you avoid it?
Demurrage is a charge the port or rail terminal levies when your container sits past its free time. We book the pickup appointment early, line up the chassis, and dray the box out before the clock runs — so you avoid the fee rather than explain it later.
Do you supply the chassis?
Yes. Chassis availability is one of the most common drayage bottlenecks, so we source the chassis as part of the booking rather than leaving it to chance at the terminal.
Can you transload my container at your warehouse?
Yes. Our 80,000 sq ft Atlanta warehouse, about 30 minutes from Hartsfield-Jackson, can transload an ocean container into domestic trailers, cross-dock it, or store it short-term — all in one coordinated move.
